That's true. I suppose in that case, I played and you hosted. The last time both of us were players in the same game would have been on Px2, though.
probably true. anyway my point was that I'd seen you active in the area I was involved in and apparently inferred activity outside it that didn't actually exist. this is all spinning wildly off-topic now though.

Well, I don't think I have a lot more to contribute to this thread so I'll just restate my opinion one final time and then probably back off of the stage.

I'd like a forum space for posting fun/pointless/nonsensical things. This is a standard area on many forums I have been a part of and I do not feel it contradicts the image of the serious, inclusive, open community that no goblins allowed is striving to be seen as. Based on the apparent opinions of other users I would suggest this be a new forum or a subforum of the current OTR. I feel that this type of forum space will be appreciated by a number of current and future members.

one thing worth noting: a lot of forums here have a "general chat" type thread, where the goals of that forum aren't really enforced and people can just talk to each other.

Like the thread of joy and enjoyment and good news and What Do You Want to Talk About? 2: Electric Bugaloo which states in the opening :

Quote:
For everyone that has been here for a while you know what this thread series is all about. For those of you that are new to the [Off Topic Room] this thread is a thread for everyone to talk about anything that is on their mind as long as it is of course not a violation of the CoC. Please try and keep volatile discussion out of this thread so as to not get it locked. Other than that feel free to kick back and talk about anything that is on your mind.

Try and be polite, friendly and by all means always remember to enjoy your time here.

Oh look it's in the OP that that's what the WDYWtTA is for......

Same here

I'd much rather be a part of a community that really feels like a community rather than a bunch of people talking at each other. that would draw me in as a newcomer way more than a bunch of boring threads about books or whatever
I don't need to know who is doing what drugs or much of anything on that level to have the feel of community

Reading profanity makes me uncomfortable. Three pages late!

yeah i think an OTR subforum and an OTR private 18+ board which still had limits (no porn, no gore, no advocating illegal activity, but also no profanity filter) would be a fine compromise

Mind if I ask a question about this? What is it you actually want a 18+ forum for? I mean no porn, no gore/violence, no illegal activity - what else is left? Or do you just want a dedicated forum you can swear in? What would you do with it if such a thread was implemented? Could you give us an example of a few thread you would consider '18+' without hitting any of those above points?

I can't imagine hiding activity is good for growth. Nobody wants to sign up for a dead forum.

On the whole side profanity issue, it should really just be something you can turn off/on in the options that defaults to the on position.

If it makes you feel better, the site kind of has a swear filter but kind of doesn't? You shouldn't try to get around it, but so many words aren't covered that I have no idea what list they are actually using this for.

I've been part of sites with no word filter at all, and generally it ends poorly. There are some words that can't be used in civil discussion, and those shouldn't be postable. I have no problem if you want to say ass, hell, damn, etc. but most swear words end up filtered out because they are specifically designed as insults.

the point of the profanity filter isn't to hide the words, it's to discourage them.

some people want this forum to be a professional, clean extension of WotC (but better run), with somewhat strict moderation, limits on content, and a positive general image. the want it to be a community that is nice, welcoming and accessible. they want their moderators to be politicians: friendly, polite and detached.

there are others who would like this forum to be an extension of woodenmarble or kher keep, which had zero limits on content (I'm thinking more of KK here), which allowed for adult content and basically absolute freedom (beyond violating the whims of the mods). it was dramatic, chaotic, often cruel and abrasive. on the other hand, it allowed for a frankness and honesty (esp from the administration) that, I think, made it more personal. i still talk to people from kher keep and i cant say that about any other online community

at its worst, the former is MTGS. at its worst, the latter is "the source"

Not having been members of either kher keep or woddenmarble, it sounds to me like a place I wouldn't want to join.

Edit:

the point is it isn't publicly accessible so some random person stumbling on the forum or someone doing a google search can't see it

So that's your only argument in favor of a hidden area?

That doesn't really answer my question. WHAT isn't publicly accessible? I don't understand what a theoretical 18+ section would even be used for let alone why we'd need one. You seem to just want one so you can have one. What subjects would be discussed that couldn't be discussed in the standard OTR?

While there are probably plenty of 18+ topics that could theoretically be appropriate a hidden section on the forum while remaining in line with the CoC, I don't think there is enough of that sort of content to justify making a section for it.

That said, I'd prefer we focus more on the topic at hand: what should be done about the Off Topic board and whether we should moderate it more heavily, split it into two sections, or split it and then hide the less-moderated section. If you want to discuss the lack of an 18+ section, that's fine, but if you want to do it more in depth, I'd prefer you do so in a different thread.

Evening folks. As part of cleaning up the Off-Topic Room a little we've set out a few guidelines for the sort of things we'd consider to be appropriate behaviour down there. You can read the entire thing by following the link here. Please feel free to raise any concerns you have with the post and it's content either here or down there. While we will be using those outlines as a base to get things back on track don't think this mean we're through with discussion. Anything you feel you need to say go ahead and say it. We're still listening.

A fair enough point. I'll put the argument aside for now while we focus on the issue at hand.

I had a nice post about needing a place for bad posters to be bad and whatnot, but the new rules aren't very restrictive and seem fair enough so now I'm torn.

Not entirely pleased, but then I wanted a drastic shift that probably didn't have enough support to be warranted at this time. Maybe in the future we can have a lovely subforum.

As long as the moderation is done tastefully, it should be fine.
